If a utility salesperson is telling you that you have to bundle expanded cable channels in with your Internet service to get high-speed access, move on to the next choice. You have several options for getting the Internet speed you want without having to pay for premium channels.
Separate Providers
You don't have to bundle services with one company as there's no guarantee that you'll save money. Services like DirecTV and Dish Network, which don't offer Internet service, are often less expensive than basic cable through blended providers. If you add in a value Internet service through CLEAR, which is wireless, or NetZero, which comes through a phone line, you can get high-speed access without any cable obligation.
Cable Options
Cable internet providers, such as Charter Communications (Comcast) and Verizon ( FiOS), also offer television as part of their bundling packages. However, as of June 2011, no matter where you live, as long as you're in a major urban area, at least one provider who bundles will offer basic cable as an option with high-speed Internet service -- the market is just too competitive. So you can find at least one provider who will work with you.
Phone Jack Options
As of 2011, most bundled providers have moved away from running everything through the telephone lines. Many people don't even want landline service anymore, so having a landline requirement turns a lot of potential customers away. If your dwelling is cable-ready, call a provider who will help you get set up.
Caution
You are the consumer -- you have the power in the situation. Don't be coerced into making a purchasing decision that you're not comfortable with. Because so many Internet service providers can hook you up within a few days of your first call, there's no rush. One sales tactic is to promote a low bundled rate, but then to almost double it after six months or a year. Pay close attention to the fine print of the pricing schedule -- and the required length of the contract.
